EDMUND FITZGERALD-50 -- Map. This AP digital embed map shows the approximate route of the final voyage of the Edmund Fitzgerald, noting several significant points along the way. The Great Lakes carrier was sailing from Superior, Wisconsin, to Detroit with a load of iron ore pellets when it sank during a severe storm on Nov. 10, 1975. All 29 men aboard were killed when the ship plunged to the bottom of Lake Superior. The sinking was later memorialized in a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. This map is current as of Oct. 29, 2025, and will not update. Source: U.S. Coast Guard.
